"In essence the only impediment to simply being ourselves lies in our constant struggle to be something else. When we abandon this struggle our true nature blossoms unconstrained." Joe Mullally

TANTRA & YOGA

There are two broad avenues in traditional 'yoga' practice - the 'esthetic' path and the 'tantra' path. Both of them encourage us to transcend the ego self (that habitual preoccupation with individual separateness focusing on me, me, me etc.). When we truly let go of this 'ego' we feel again our deep connection with the all and become much more deeply present to each moment, each experience in our lives.

Tragic is it not that so many people only come to feel this way when they are at death's door? Only then does the ego drop enough so they see the utter triviality of their myriad important 'day to day concerns', only then do they awaken fully to the true wonder and awe that is here and now in the precious beauty of life's every moment. Small wonder that near death experiences cause such profound change and enlightenment in those fortunate enough to survive them.

How much more profound our life experience is when we transcend the 'ego' and are fully present to it all.

Of the two broad yoga traditions, the more widely known 'esthetic yoga' champions transcendence through individuation, self refinement and often austere self discipline in so many of it's practices, meditations and routines. Tantra yoga on the other hand, encourages us to actively embrace all of ourselves and enter into all of live completely. Here we go deeply into each situation, immersing ourselves totally therein so through this total experience we may transcend. We start by connecting inside within ourselves through our deepest human intimacy and sensuality. For where else would we start if not at the very core of our own being in that most human presence which connects us directly into the very process of creation itself. This is why sexuality is so sacred in Tantra, because if we are not real in this our basic humanity then we cannot be real in anything.

The true tantric way in sexuality has never been one of promiscuity. Promiscuity is just as dishonoring and damaging to the sacred beauty of our being as the cruelty of sexual repression itself is. What is needed is that we simply summon the courage to honestly embrace our sexuality, cry the tears and face the fears, acknowledge the past, the programming, the cheating, the lies and the pain, and then genuinely let it all go. If we do this then finally we come to truly know, accept and cherish ourselves simply for ourselves with no strings attached. This is the most wonderful freedom. This is the sound foundation from which to set real boundaries, choose real partners and attract real friends. Vitality and happiness inevitably surround us when we ourselves are coming from a respectful attitude, an honest openness and a strong sure centre within ourselves. No longer need we refer to bookshelves filled with colour illustrated advice manuals extolling contorted positions, or department store isles proffering chic perfect body merchandise.

We rely simply instead on the guidebook of our own true heart.

All life and every aspect of being including sexuality are held as profoundly sacred in tantra. As the path of 'full aliveness' how could it be otherwise! And because Tantric Yoga teaches us to be fully real and fully present in everything we do, it brings with it simplicity in living, open honesty of heart and the deepest genuine reverence & respect for ourselves, for others, for every facet of life and for the blessedness &
beauty of our entire natural world.
